Cool down your home by painting your roof white

By: McCoy's Editorial Team

When I was a kid, I had to do a science project where I put ice cubes on different colored pieces of paper to see how fast the ice melted. Spoiler alert: the darker the paper, the faster the ice melted. So, it came as no surprise to me when my brother asked me about painting his roof white during the 4th of July weekend. Cool roofs reflect heat and light away from your home and reduce your utility costs.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that if every American roof were white, it would amount to the same energy savings as removing every car in the world off the roads for 11 years. The following video shows a very creative way one Austin, Texas resident used a white roof to cool his home.

As a side note: McCoy’s recommends using a proper roof coating, like Black Jack Roof-Guard Elastomeric Roof Coating instead of random house paint found in the trash.
