DOE awards $120M for innovative weatherization projects

By: McCoy's Editorial Team

The Department of Energy recently announced that it has awarded nearly $120 million to 120 companies to drive innovation for weatherization projects. This funding is not limited to traditional government-funded weatherization programs, but also goes out to private and non-profit companies, including select Habitat for Humanity chapters.

These awards will allow these programs to install renewable energy systems and cutting-edge energy efficiency technologies. This includes installing technologies such as solar heating systems, solar photovoltaic panels and shingles, small-scale wind turbines, new insulation technologies, cool roofs, high-efficiency appliances, tankless hot water systems, high-efficiency combination boilers for hot water and heat, in-home energy monitors, and ductless heat pump systems.

The Recovery Act Weatherization Program is weatherizing approximately 25,000 homes a month and supported more than 13,000 jobs in the second quarter of 2010.
