Can a home be really old AND really green?

LEEDS certification for a older, historical home

Typically when you think of a residential home getting a decent LEEDS rating, you are probably thinking of new home construction. After all, it's hard enough using the latest and greatest new building products and techniques to get a decent LEEDS rating.

But Portico Residential in San Antonio has taken a 100-year-old home in the King William Historical District and managed to keep the home's historical character while remodelling it and achieving a Platinum LEEDS rating.

It's inspiring. If they can do this with a 100-year-old home, it seems as though the potential is there to remodel newer homes and make them more energy efficient, bringing down the cost to operate the home.
