Solar and green housing can be affordable

By: McCoy's Editorial Team

Still not sold on solar and green energy? Don’t think you can afford it? The following video shows that green building does, in fact, go hand in hand with affordable housing.

Solara, a California development with the highest percentage of photovoltaic solar of any affordable housing community in the state, produces 87% of its own energy, reducing tenants’ utility bills by 68%, based on two years of data collection. Green building costs were just over $1,500 extra per unit building. A more recent green affordable housing unit, Los Vecinos, cost 1 to 2% more than traditional building to go green for its 42 units, and anticipates 90 to 100% of its energy will be generated by its solar panels, saving its 42 residents collectively a quarter of a million dollars a year in energy expenses.
