TED talks architect reinvents how design impacts the environment
Imagine building a drawbridge that curls up into a ball to let ships pass, or a cathedral made from 66,000 tiny seeds suspended in light-transmitting optic material. TED is a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading the most innovative ideas in technology, entertainment and design. At the 2011 TED convention, UK architect Thomas Heatherwick shares how he reimagines the aesthetics of design to combine unusual beauty with complete functionality, not only for the building but also for the community it supports. In one example, he shaves off space from the bottom layers of an urban apartment complex, giving the towers a funnel-like appearance, to allow for more room for 80% more lush landscaping, giving back green space to the city and increasing the commercial value.
