You're gonna leak without a cricket!
A fireplace burning on a cold night is treat for sure, but having water getting into your house as the result of a leaky chimney can be a real problem.
A leaking chimney can be a difficult problem to fix, especially if the chimney sits at the bottom of a steep roof with no cricket to divert water around the sides. Poorly installed or deteriorating flashing won't keep out the moisture.
The right way to fix a problem like this is to tear off the shingles around the chimney and the old flashing and install what's called a cricket with new flashing.
