Donate to Phoenix Commotion
At McCoy’s we’re committed to family values. And that commitment isn’t just marketing spin. We believe a family’s self esteem increases with home ownership. It’s not only true where we do business in the South, but all over the country, and the world. By encouraging The Phoenix Commotion, we are promoting a model that will help us to be better stewards of our planet.
When you make a supply card donation on mccoys.com designated for the Phoenix Commotion, we’ll shoot a case of nails to Dan Phillips and his crew. And you can be assured that 100% of your donation will go to The Phoenix Commotion. And we always give Dan the largest discount allowed by our company. We’re proud to be a sponsor of The Phoenix Commotion. We’re proud to be a part of a solution. And we’re especially proud that The Phoenix Commotion has chosen to build with McCoy’s since 1997. So, Dan, Go Build Something! We’re right behind you.

About The Phoenix Commotion
The Phoenix Commotion is a low-income housing initiative in Huntsville, Texas, created to prove that one can build for the poor and still make a reasonable living. Founded by Dan and Marsha Phillips, the company uses free, salvage and recycled materials and only hires unskilled labor at minimum wage. By keeping labor costs low and using free or very low-cost building materials, the homes are truly affordable, and in the meantime workers develop marketable skills.
Since the design of each house grows from the materials that are available, no two are alike. And since, often enough, the materials available have blemishes of one sort or another, blemish is featured. Casements are warped, doors are crooked, floor coverings are outrageous, and roofing occasionally has rusty spots. But with the abiding mantra that repetition creates pattern, if there are enough of literally anything, a pleasant and interesting design can be created. Photographs and discussions can be found on the website: www.phoenixcommotion.com.
Over the years The Phoenix Commotion has garnered considerable national and international attention. In 2003, the Institute for Social Invention in London recognized The Phoenix Commotion as having the most innovative housing model worldwide. Major national media have covered the initiative, including Fine Homebuilding, People, and Natural Home magazines, HGTV, CNN, Discovery Channel, New York Times, NBC Today Show, and many others. Dan regularly lectures at Schools of Architecture around the country as well as sustainability conferences.
With the crushing need for affordable housing across the country and around the world, The Phoenix Commotion is attempting to spread the model through demonstration and advocacy. To date, two other commotions are up and running, the most developed of which is Living Paradigm in Houston, with another in Cooper, Texas. While The Phoenix Commotion is in the private sector, donations are nevertheless welcome and always put to good use.
