Galveston residents can make donations at McCoy's to replace hurricane damaged trees
GALVESTON, Texas, September 3, 2009 —McCoy’s Building Supply announced today that it is accepting donations at its Galveston location to help reforest the recuperating city after the destruction of Hurricane Ike.
The retail supplier of lumber, hardware and building materials is located at 7500 Broadway. Residents can make donations at the register in $1, $3 or $5 increments. One hundred percent of donation proceeds go to the Galveston Island Tree Conservancy, an official sub-committee recognized by the City of Galveston to spear-head the tree replanting efforts.
The salty storm surge of Hurricane Ike killed nearly half of the trees in Galveston, including hundreds of live oaks lining Broadway Boulevard, a symbol of homecoming to many island residents.
"Overall on public property there are 45,000 trees that were killed or dying that were marked for removal by FEMA," said Texas Forest Service urban forester Pete Smith.
McCoy’s manager Brad Claussen is looking forward to the full recovery of Galveston and its surrounding areas.
"I’m actually finishing the final post-Ike repairs to my house this week," Claussen said. "With the rebuilding coming to a close for a lot of people, it’s time to start focusing on repairing the landscape of Galveston. A lot of residents have put a lot of effort into bringing the Island back to life, and McCoy’s is proud to be a part of that.
