McCoy's manager celebrates 25 year milestone
VICTORIA, Texas, September 14, 2009 – As manager B.K. Harrison celebrates his 25th anniversary with McCoy’s Building Supply on September 14, his store crew ranks as one of the most tenured branches of the 83 store retailer.
“It’s easy to slip into 25 years of service when you’re surrounded by a crew as great as mine,” said Harrison. “It’s the people I work with and our customers that make me look forward to my work day each day. All the folks here at McCoy’s are a tight knit group with a lot of experience and know-how, and we’re dedicated to serving Victoria together.”
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, average employment tenure in the U.S. is 4.1 years, with retail jobs like McCoy’s typically having a shorter tenure, at 2.9 years. The building materials retailer breaks the mold for both categories with longer than typical tenure from its employees. The average employee tenure at McCoy’s Victoria location is 8.6 years.
Long-term service with McCoy’s is worn as a badge of honor. Employees who rank in the 500 most-tenured positions in the company receive a sticker with their ranking number to wear proudly on their name tags. A wall in the common area of the company’s headquarters in San Marcos, Texas displays the top 500 employees names.
“It’s the Fab 500!” McCoy’s CEO Brian McCoy said. “Let me tell you, it keeps me humble when I see Jon Wallace and Chuck Churchwell who have longer tenure than I do. I used to empty Chuck’s garbage can as a kid! Honestly, it makes me very proud that so many team members have dedicated themselves to the long-term success of McCoy’s Building Supply. We’re a family business, and our employees are like family.”
McCoy’s Victoria branch opened in 1978 and was managed by now Regional Manager Chester Varnell. Harrison worked as Assistant Manager when Varnell managed the Victoria store.
“It’s always fun to work with a guy who has a great personality and a real understanding of the building material business,” said Varnell. “I’ve known B.K. since he started with McCoy’s, and his long term experience and insight have made him an integral part of our Victoria team.”
