Duke Energy out of North Carolina has teamed up with City of San Antonio-owned CPS Energy and juwi solar Inc. to create the Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute, housed on the campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The institute will include the 14-megawatt Blue Wing Solar Project which broke ground in April with plans to be operational by the end of the year.

Construction will take place near the intersection of IH 37 and U.S. 181 and includes 214,500 ground-mounted First Solar thin-film panels, making it the largest photovoltaic project in Texas. The solar plant estimates it will generate 26,570 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power 1,800 San Antonio homes.
