ProSales Magazine Names McCoy’s 2008 Public Service Leaders

San Marcos, Texas’ McCoy Family Wins Public Service Leader Award

Washington, DC – ProSales magazine, the premier publication for executives at pro-oriented lumber and building material dealerships, has named the McCoy family of San Marcos, Texas, as its 2008 Public Service Leaders in recognition of their support of and service to the San Marcos, Texas, community.

The honor—highlighted in ProSales’ August edition cover story—recognizes close to 30 years of good works by Emmett and Miriam McCoy, their son (and now company president) Brian McCoy and granddaughter Meagan Jones. Among the more notable examples:

In 2000, the McCoys gave a $20 million endowment Texas State University, located in San Marcos near McCoy’s headquarters roughly 30 miles south of Austin. Earmarked for the university’s business school, the funds continue to be used at the Emmett and Miriam McCoy College of Business Administration.

The McCoys presented $500,000 to the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center for a new family violence shelter in 2007. Another $500,000 was pledged in a challenge grant that will be presented after an additional $500,000 has been raised. The center provides crisis intervention, education and violence prevention services to victims of violence, sexual assault and child abuse in Hays and Caldwell counties.

Emmett and Miriam McCoy donated $360,000 last year to provide the final piece of a $5.1 million financial puzzle that allowed San Marcos to create a preserve that sits above Spring Lake, the headwaters of the San Marcos River. Had the land not been purchased, a developer would have turned it into a private resort and hotel.

The company remains a vital contributor to a number of non-profit agencies, including Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross. It also gives to Safe At Home, a volunteer community service program dedicated to reducing the risk of death and injury from falls in the home.

In rural areas of Texas, McCoy’s has gotten involved with youth agriculture programs such as the 4-H Club and Future Farmers of America. The company has donated fencing products and funds to the programs.

McCoy family members have been actively involved in the Lumbermen’s Association of Texas (LAT) since the 1980s. Emmett and Brian McCoy were named LAT’s Lumbermen of the Year for 1990 and 2008, respectively, and now Meagan Jones (Brian’s daughter) is on the LAT board.

“Sometimes people in business have to get inspired by others; they have to look at the ways they can give back. I know I was inspired by my parents,” Brian McCoy tells senior editor Andy Carlo in the article.

Founded by Frank McCoy as a roofing company in 1927, son Emmett began expanding McCoy’s Building Supply in the 1960s, increasing the number of outlets and eventually starting to sell lumber. Brian took over in the mid-1990s and has continued to build McCoy’s to the point where it now has 84 stores in 86 locations (the other two are door and millwork shops) in Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. McCoy’s ranks 11th on the ProSales 100 list of America’s top LBM dealerships, with sales of $567 million last year.

“We know we are beating some pretty big odds with a family run business in the fourth generation,” McCoy says. “So much of our industry is a family business. It’s getting a little rarer all the time, but it’s still a family business.”
