Eastwood Raises the Bar on Safety for McCoy’s Building Supply

SAN MARCOS, Texas–McCoy’s Building Supply’s Risk Manager, Dwayne Eastwood, has been named Risk & Insurance® magazine’s 2008 Risk Innovator™ in the Retail/Wholesale category.

The Risk & Insurance® Risk Innovator™ Award recognizes winners in 13 different industries who have, in the past year, demonstrated innovation and excellence in risk management. These key individuals see risk differently and have resolved risk-related problems in a unique or innovative way. They view risk not only as a threat, but also as an opportunity for their organizations.

For Eastwood and the McCoy’s team, the challenge was to improve the number of auto liability claims for the company. McCoy’s insurer Liberty Mutual conducted a benchmark analysis that showed the company had twice as many claims as other retail businesses in its region.

Building upon one of Liberty Mutual’s prefabricated training programs, Eastwood customized the program to appeal and relate to McCoy’s team members. The revised program went beyond the usual driver awareness skills, incorporating information for delivery drivers like proper loading and unloading techniques and securing materials.

As a result of Eastwood’s revised training program, McCoy’s accident record improved vastly and now rates 50 percent better than other retailers in the region.

Under Eastwood’s leadership, McCoy’s was also recently awarded the Gold Award by Liberty Mutual for “outstanding safety performance in the delivery of building materials throughout the Southwest.” This is McCoy’s third time to win the award, which is based on the company’s low auto crash rate. Their first and second wins were in 2004 and 2007.
